Chemical Peel Q & A

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel improves the appearance of skin on your face, neck, and hands by gently removing the outer layer of skin to reveal the smoother layer underneath.

Dr. Llaurado applies a chemical solution that exfoliates your skin, and eventually, it peels off, revealing fresh, new skin. Chemical peels can be used to treat:

  • Aging skin
  • Sagging skin
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Scars, including acne scars
  • Melasma, a skin condition that causes patches of discoloration

What are the different types of chemical peels?

There are three types of chemical peels:

Light or superficial peel

A superficial peel uses alpha-hydroxy acid or another mild acid to penetrate and exfoliate only the outer layer of your skin. The healing process takes about one to seven days.

Medium peel

A medium peel is mid-grade strength and typically uses glycolic or trichloroacetic acid to penetrate the outside and middle layers of your skin and remove damaged skin cells. Medium peels have a seven- to 14-day healing process.

Deep peel

A deep peel is the most potent chemical peel and uses trichloroacetic acid or phenol to penetrate the middle layer of your skin deeply. This procedure can only be used on the face one time and may require 14 to 21 days to heal.

Dr. Llaurado offers a variety of chemical peels including the Perfect Peel, a quick 15-minute medium peel using a key anti-aging ingredient that’s unprecedented in the world of chemical peels.

The ingredient, glutathione, is the ultimate antioxidant and fights damage deep into your skin. Glutathione has a wealth of benefits and is produced naturally in your body.

Who is a good candidate for a chemical peel?

A chemical peel works on all skin types, but it’s most useful for people with fair skin. You’re not a good candidate for a chemical peel if you’re nursing or pregnant, or if you have:

  • Sunburn
  • An infection
  • Cut or broken skin
  • An active skin disease
  • Herpes simplex 1 sores
  • A history of abnormal skin scarring
  • Psoriasis, dermatitis, rosacea, or eczema
  • Taken specific acne treatments in the previous six months

A chemical peel is a suitable treatment option for most people and makes an excellent, non-surgical treatment method to rejuvenate and refresh your skin. Call or book your appointment online to discuss with Dr. Llaurado which chemical peel is right for you.
