Botox® Q & A

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX®, or botulinum toxin type A, is made from a toxin that’s produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. In small doses, BOTOX is used to safely and effectively treat certain health and cosmetic problems, such as:

  • Chronic migraine
  • Overactive bladder
  • Strabismus, or misaligned eyes
  • Blepharospasm, or uncontrollable blinking
  • Temporary reduction of facial lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperhidrosis, a common disorder involving excessive sweating in underarms and feet
  • Cervical dystonia, a neurological disorder that causes severe muscle contractions of the neck and shoulders

Dr. Llaurado offers BOTOX and Xeomin for facial procedures and BOTOX as a treatment for hyperhidrosis.

How does BOTOX work?

When BOTOX is administered under your skin, it blocks specific signals from the nerves to the muscles and weakens or paralyzes the muscles.

When the treated muscles can no longer contract, wrinkles and lines relax and soften, and the area appears fuller and smoother.

The procedure only takes a few minutes in Dr. Llaurado’s office, and no anesthesia is needed. It usually takes around three to seven days for you to notice the full effects of a BOTOX treatment.

You might experience some mild bruising and swelling at the treatment area for a few days following your treatment.

The results can last anywhere from three months to six months, or more depending on the individual.

Over time, with repeated treatments, many people notice their lines and wrinkles reappear with less prominence as the muscles become trained to relax.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin, or incobotulinumtoxinA, works in the same fashion as BOTOX. The neurotoxin acts on the nerve endings in muscles to prevent muscle contractions.

Dr. Llaurado provides Xeomin as a treatment to soften and smooth wrinkles and lines. It’s also used in medicine to treat cervical dystonia and blepharospasm.

Xeomin is different because it has no additives, just the botulinum toxin type A, so there’s less chance your body will produce antibodies and lessen the effects of the treatment.

Xeomin is a popular choice because the effects last about the same length of time as BOTOX.

With many years of experience and using the eyes of a highly-trained surgeon, Dr. Llaurado provides quality, precision results. Call or book your appointment online to visit Dr. Llaurado and find out how you could benefit from Xeomin or BOTOX treatment.
